Civic Exchange Proud to Co-Organise Walk21 Hong Kong
Asia’s first international conference on walkable cities and pedestrian-first environments
HONG KONG, 19 September 2016 – Independent public policy think tank Civic Exchange is delighted to announce that it is co-organising the Walk21 Hong Kong Conference on 3-7 October at the HKCEC. Civic Exchange and Walk21, an international leader in championing walking, are producing this Conference with an objective to advance civic engagement and influence public policy on the theme of urban walkability. The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust is the Lead Sponsor of this five-day event. Through this project the Trust hopes to promote walking as a driver to shape a low carbon and liveable city. The event will highlight how pedestrian-first environments promote economic growth, social inclusion, low carbon emission and other benefits that contribute to societal and individual well-being.
This is the 17th annual International Walk21 Conference and the first time ever that the event has been held in Asia. The Conference will bring together some 500 delegates with world-class speakers including city mayors, industry experts, chief executives, civic organisations and leading academics. Participants can qualify for Continuing Professional Development points and take part in Walkshops that showcase Hong Kong’s walkable features from its urban heart to remote country trails.
In addition, the Conference offers a free public forum, “Hong Kong Jockey Club Public Forum: Walking Towards a Low-Carbon Hong Kong” on Thursday 6 October. It will feature undersecretaries from the HKSAR government and other global walkability experts who will encourage the public to embrace a low-carbon lifestyle and make Hong Kong more walkable.
Civic Exchange CEO Maura Wong says, “Walk21 Hong Kong breaks new grounds – by assembling large number of government officials from Hong Kong, Singapore, Stockholm, Berlin, and other parts of the world in the same room with industry experts and civic leaders to talk about a new vision for cities in the future.” Civic Exchange is pleased to host the Conference and use it as a platform to showcase Hong Kong as a walkable city as well as a number of exciting urban projects that promise to transform our concept of Hong Kong’s urban landscape.
