Civic Exchange Expands Research Team

HONG KONG, 16 November 2017 – Civic Exchange is proud to welcome new members to our team, including several experts who have long histories with our organisation.

Ms Michele Weldon, who first worked with Civic Exchange in 2004, has rejoined the think-tank as Programme Director. Ms Weldon has more than 20 years of experience in managing development and environmental programs with think-tanks, the private sector, nongovernment organizations, and the United Nations. She has worked at the International Rice Research Institute in the Philippines and the UN in India.  Ms Weldon has a wide range of experience across many countries, including Cambodia, Hong Kong, India, the Philippines, Thailand, South Africa, Spain, and the United Kingdom.  Ms Weldon has a Master’s Degree in Environment and Development from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in London and an undergraduate degree in International Economic Development. Mr Jonathan Lin, who holds a Master’s of Science in Global Energy and Climate Policy from SOAS, has joined as a Researcher.

Civic Exchange also appointed two new Fellows: Ms Yan-yan Yip and Dr Frederick Lee.

Ms Yan-yan Yip is the CEO of WYNG Foundation. Prior to joining WYNG Foundation in May 2016, she was the CEO of Civic Exchange. Ms Yip not only has long experience in public policy research and civic engagement, but also has developed interests in peace education and conflict transformation, providing training in Sweden, India, the United States, Japan and mainland China. Ms Yip was on the board of HER Fund and was the Chairperson of the Little Life Warrior Society in Hong Kong, and is currently its Board Member. She is also a Board Member of the Clean Air Network and an Asia Society 21 Young Leader.

Dr Frederick Lee is Director of the Water Governance Research Program and Associate Director of the Policy for Sustainability Lab at the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Hong Kong. Dr Lee supported Civic Exchange during the launch of “The Illusion of Plenty: Hong Kong’s Water Security, Working Towards Regional Water Harmony,” published earlier this year by Civic Exchange and ADM Capital Foundation. Dr Lee, who holds a PhD degree in Urban Planning from MIT, has published in international journals and has co-edited books on preserving the environment and cultural heritage.

Civic Exchange has expanded its panel of Walkability experts with three new additions: Mr Alok Jain, Ms Jennifer Walker Frisinger and Dr Louie Sieh.

Mr Alok Jain, a Civic Exchange Fellow, will co-convene this group, which works on improving the pedestrian experience in Hong Kong. He is the Managing Director of Trans-consult Asia, a consulting firm specializing in technology and innovation in traffic and transportation. He has more than 25 years of experience in the transportation industry, having previously worked as Deputy Operations Director of the Kowloon Motor Bus Company and General Manager – Marketing for Kowloon Canton Railway. Mr Jain was also a Director at MVA, the transport and planning consultancy.

Mr Jain will be joined by Ms Jennifer Walker Frisinger, CEO of Walk DVRC. This NGO’s mission is to create a walkable and liveable Central Business District, beginning with the revitalisation of Des Voeux Road Central, including linking this central artery to the cultural and heritage sites that surround it. Dr. Louie Sieh, a built environment consultant with a PhD in Planning Studies from University College London, will also join the Walkability expert group.
