Civic Exchange Supporting ‘Very DVRC’: Opening Up Des Voeux Road Central

Part of Des Voeux Road Central, one of the main avenues in Hong Kong’s downtown core, was closed off to its usual vehicle traffic for one day — from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., 25 September 2016. The initiative, called Very DVRC, was co-organised by Walk DVRC, the Clean Air Network (CAN), Hong Kong Public Space Initiative, and curated by Very Hong Kong. Civic Exchange was a supporting organisation of this initiative.

A public space was created for art, sport, culture and environmental events over a 200-metre segment, from Man Wa Lane to Morris Street in Sheung Wan. This was possible thanks to a temporary traffic arrangement by the Hong Kong Transport Department.

Originally, the plan was to pedestrianise a larger space, stretching 1.4 kilometres from Pedder Street in the core of Central. However, the area for Very DVRC was greatly reduced because the Hong Kong Police was concerned about public safety, due to the use of trams. Very DVRC hopes to resolve this issue in the future.
